G. K. Chesterton<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n

Chesterton vivi\u00f3 en el \u00e1mbito familiar una infancia alegre y llena de imaginaci\u00f3n, fantas\u00eda y maravillas gracias a los cuentos de hadas que le representaba su padre Edward en el teatro de juguete que ten\u00eda en casa. Cuando estudiaba en St. Paul\u2019s School era un adolescente reservado, miope, torpe en la actividad f\u00edsica, amigo de sus amigos. Como estudiante no destacaba especialmente, pero de camino hacia la escuela recitaba de memoria fragmentos de obras cl\u00e1sicas de la literatura inglesa que hab\u00eda le\u00eddo en la biblioteca de su padre. En el periodo universitario en la Slade School of Fine Art ya era un joven alto y esbelto que ten\u00eda dudas a la hora de escoger entre sus aptitudes literarias y art\u00edsticas. Dedicado a la literatura y al periodismo, y acostumbrado al estilo de vida alrededor de Fleet Street entre tabernas, conversaciones, pubs, redacciones de diarios, discusiones y restaurantes, se convirti\u00f3 en una figura popular y entra\u00f1able, en parte tambi\u00e9n por sus despistes y su apariencia f\u00edsica. Med\u00eda 1,93 m de altura y pesaba 134 kilos. De gran capacidad de abstracci\u00f3n y de trabajo, desplegaba una extraordinaria actividad en actos, conferencias y debates tanto en Inglaterra como durante sus viajes al extranjero. Con un notable sentido del humor, observaci\u00f3n penetrante y agudeza mental, era un excelente conversador y un gran polemista. Defensor del hombre com\u00fan, de la familia y de la tradici\u00f3n, se opuso a la visi\u00f3n del mundo moderno de sus contempor\u00e1neos G. B. Shaw y H. G Wells. Fue un activo reformador social, denunciando el esc\u00e1ndalo Marconi, la venta de t\u00edtulos nobiliarios y la financiaci\u00f3n ilegal de los partidos. Con su hermano Cecil se opuso a algunas leyes, como por ejemplo la de educaci\u00f3n, la del control de natalidad y la eugenesia. Autor de muchas an\u00e9cdotas, su generosidad hizo que el director del hotel de Varsovia, en su estancia en Polonia, le pidiera de salir por la puerta de atr\u00e1s porque todos los mendigos de la ciudad lo esperaban en la entrada principal. Su aportaci\u00f3n econ\u00f3mica hizo posible la construcci\u00f3n de St. Teresa\u2019s Catholic Church, en Beaconsfield.<\/p>\n
